In 2001 Kingspan Off-Site purchased a German-based business, TEK Haus, which manufactured Structurally Insulated Panels (SIPs). Incorporating SIPs technology, the Kingspan TEK Building System was launched in 2001. Kingspan Off-Site then acquired Century Homes, set up by the McCaughey brothers, in 2005. Kingspan Century continues to operate in Ireland offering a portfolio of timber frame solutions. In 2006, Potton, a self-build specialist, and Pace Timber Frame also became part of the group as a result of further acquisitions.
The Kingspan TEK Building System is particularly popular with social housing providers, using SIPs to enable thermally efficient homes to be built quickly. The SIPs are precision-engineered and pre-insulated off-site, minimising the time spent on-site and the overall build time. The thermal efficiency of the resulting houses is maximised by the airtightness of the system, achieved by the panel's unique jointing system. The Kingspan TEK building system delivers a U-value of just 0.20W/m²K, reducing heating bills and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional build methods. The Kingspan TEK Building System was used in the Kingspan Lighthouse project - the award-winning, innovative net-zero Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 house.
