Green Oak Framing

The Kingspan Structural Insulated Panels & Green Oak Framing

GREEN OAK FRAMED BUILDINGS

These buildings have a unique architectural style and character which affords the internal display of traditionally crafted and jointed timbers. As well as their aesthetic benefits, these timbers provide the structural frame of the building and a support framework for a cladding system envelope. Normally this cladding system comprises a timber stud wall with infill insulation which is weatherproofed with a breather membrane and either timber boarding on battens or a brickwork leaf with a cavity behind it.

THE USE OF KINGSPAN STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELS

Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels are now being used as a cladding envelope for green oak framed buildings in stead of a timber stud wall. These panels are joined together in exactly the same way as when used as the structural element of the Kingspan TEK System, but the panels are also fixed to the oak framework.

This method of construction provides many benefits. Some of which are detailed below. Of course many of the generic benefits of the Kingspan TEK Building System also apply to the use of Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels in green oak framed buildings.

SPEED

The use of Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels is considerably faster than erecting a stud wall and installing insulation in it. It provides an economical fast track system.

THERMAL PERFORMANCE

Complete walls can easily provide extremely low U-values as shown in the table below.

NEGLIGIBLE COLD BRIDGING

The high proportion of cold bridging in a traditional timber stud wall is almost completely eliminated with the use of Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels. The only cold bridges are around openings where timbers are fixed into channels routed out of the insulation core of the Kingspan TEK Structural Insulated Panels. These timbers are used for the fixing of door and window frames.

This amounts to 2% of bridging timber for a typical domestic green oak frame building. An insignificant cold bridge is also created by the fixings that attach the panels to the oak frame.

“As a progressive company producing traditionally jointed heavy timber frames, T J Crump Oakwrights have been keen to find an enclosure system that offers cutting edge thermal efficiency with minimal on-site fitting time. SIPs help to achieve this by allowing us to pre-cut the panels in our workshop. Our clients appreciate the character of a traditionally constructed oak frame with state of the art insulation levels.”
